¡algunos no mostraron nada de miedo! Este halcón negro común se halla en ambas costas y en toda Centroamérica, llegando hasta el norte de México, y algunos migran hacia Arizona. Esta foto fue capturada en el río Tárcoles mientras navegábamos tranquilamente en nuestra embarcación. Su alimentación se basa principalmente en cangrejos, reptiles y peces pequeños. Creo que había una gran cantidad de cangrejos durante todo el año en el río, ya que también vimos muchos jóvenes.

Some of them didn't seem afraid at all! This common black hawk is found on both coasts and throughout Central America, extending as far north as Mexico, and some migrate to Arizona. This photo was taken on the Tárcoles River while we were peacefully cruising in our boat. Its diet consists mainly of crabs, reptiles, and small fish. I think there were plenty of crabs in the river year-round, since we also saw many young ones.

Mientras esperábamos nuestro primer paseo en bote en la rampa del Hombre Cocodrilo, estuvimos tomando fotos manualmente a los chochines de nuca rojiza que se encontraban a lo largo de una cerca. Cuando me giré, justo detrás de nosotros había un joven que nos observaba. Me moví un poco y capturé algunas fotos de cuerpo entero, pero esta primera es la única en la que nos mira directamente. Creo que aún estaba allí cuando nos marchamos.

While we were waiting for our first boat ride at the Crocodile Man’s ramp, we were taking photos by hand of the red-necked wrenlets that were perched along a fence. When I turned around, there was a young man right behind us watching us. I moved a little and took a few full-body shots, but this first one is the only one where he’s looking directly at us. I think he was still there when we left.

Parece que este es más grande y se asemeja más al plumaje de un adulto. Solíamos verlo frecuentemente en el río y a lo largo de los caminos del campo. Noten el valor alto de ISO y la baja velocidad de obturación. La razón es que hay poca luz. Comprendo por qué muchos buscan objetivos más luminosos f/4 o incluso f/2.8 para captar más luz, pero son voluminosos y pesados.

This one seems to be larger and more similar to an adult’s plumage. We used to see it frequently by the river and along country roads. Note the high ISO setting and slow shutter speed. The reason is that there is little light. I understand why many people look for faster lenses f/4 or even f/2.8 to capture more light, but they’re bulky and heavy.

Optamos por no llevar nuestros 500 f/4 y 600 f/4 para poder movernos con más facilidad utilizando los más compactos Nikkor 500 f/5.6 PF, y los resultados fueron muy satisfactorios. La mayoría de las cámaras recientes manejan bien los ISO altos.

We decided not to bring our 500 f/4 and 600 f/4 lenses so we could move around more easily using the more compact Nikkor 500 f/5.6 PF lenses, and the results were very satisfying. Most recent cameras handle high ISO settings well.

Aprendí a reconocerlo de inmediato. Es el halcón caminero, y observamos muchos. Pienso que es el halcón más abundante, ya que su presencia es amplia. Esta imagen específica fue tomada en el río Frío, en Caño Negro, pero parecía que los veíamos en varios lugares. Los encontramos en áreas urbanas, posados en postes y cables, en árboles, en espacios abiertos y cerca del agua.

I learned to recognize it right away. It’s the Northern Goshawk, and we saw many of them. I think it’s the most common hawk, since it’s found so widely. This particular photo was taken on the Frío River in Caño Negro, but it seemed like we were seeing them in various places. We found them in urban areas, perched on poles and power lines, in trees, in open spaces, and near the water.

Son muy pequeños, midiendo apenas unos 38 centímetros de altura. Un día ¡se juntaron todos! estábamos en un camino rural en el pequeño pueblo de Tárcoles. Habíamos visto una especie de iguana en un tronco que se movió detrás de nosotros mientras intentábamos tomarle una foto. Me salí y caminé un poco por un sendero. Algo de color rojizo pasó volando bajo por el camino y luego se posó en un árbol grande. Estaba bastante cerca, así que lo seguí subiendo por las ramas enormes e incluso a otra rama antes de que volara lejos.

They’re very small, measuring just about 38 centimeters tall. One day they were all there at once! we were on a country road in the small town of Tárcoles. We’d spotted a kind of iguana on a log that moved behind us as we tried to take a picture of it. I got out of the car and walked a little way down a trail. Something reddish flew low across the path and then landed on a large tree. It was quite close, so I followed it as it climbed up the huge branches and even onto another branch before it flew away.

Era un halcón peregrino y lo noté, lo reconocí y lo seguí.. y obtuve unas imágenes fantásticas. Creo que fue la primera ocasión en que hice esto solo en Costa Rica. Los chicos estaban cerca del vehículo y se molestaros porque lo había mantenido para mí, pero estaba convencido de que se habría ido volando si les hubiera gritado. It was a peregrine falcon, and I spotted it, recognized it, and followed it... and got some fantastic shots. I think that was the first time I’d ever done that on my own in Costa Rica. The kids were standing near the car and got upset because I’d kept it to myself, but I was convinced it would have flown away if I’d called out to them.

We took a boat tour in Caño Negro to look for kingfishers, and the second outing was to the lagoon in search of yellow-headed caracaras. We started out with storm clouds in the distance, and we got caught in a heavy downpour. I mean, we got completely soaked; it took three days for my shoes to dry. The owners offered us a make-up trip the next morning,

que no nos permitió observar caracaras de cerca, pero sí algo que captó nuestra atención. Vimos un juvenil de milano caracolero posado en unos arbustos bajos en el pantano. El macho adulto es de color gris, y la hembra adulta es marrón, similar a los juveniles, pero los libros dicen que tiene un tono grisáceo. Todos nuestros guías coincidieron en que era un individuo joven, y a mí me pareció correcto.

which prevented us from observing caracaras up close, but it did catch our attention. We saw a juvenile snail kite perched on some low bushes in the marsh. The adult male is gray, and the adult female is brown, similar to the juveniles, but the books say she has a grayish tint. All of our guides agreed that it was a young bird, and that seemed correct to me.

Estaba muy emocionado de haberlo visto. Se movió en varias ocasiones y nosotros lo seguimos despacio en la lancha. Conseguí tomar algunas fotos mientras volaba mientras intentábamos seguir su ritmo. Regresó a posarse entre unos arbustos bajos, y mi vista quedó casi por completo bloqueada por las ramas y el follaje. Lo contemplábamos.

I was really excited to have seen it. It moved around several times, and we followed it slowly in the boat. I managed to take a few photos as it flew by while we tried to keep up with it. It returned to perch among some low bushes, and my view was almost completely blocked by the branches and foliage. We watched it.
