What to See in the Black Forest, Southern Germany’s Most Fascinating Forest The chiming of cuckoo clocks, the murmur of waterfalls, and the atmosphere of its charming towns and cities make this area the ideal getaway in Germany
What to See in the Black Forest, Southern Germany’s Most Fascinating Forest The chiming of cuckoo clocks, the murmur of waterfalls, and the atmosphere of its charming towns and cities make this area the ideal getaway in Germany. The highlight of the Black Forest is its German name:
Schwarzwald.
The Black Forest. Although it is neither a “forest” wald simply means “forest” nor “black” it has more deciduous trees than conifers , its name evokes something mysterious and wild, shrouded in legends. It is magnificent in the fall, when it is draped in gold, and in any case, it is one of Germany’s most rugged natural areas. It is located in the southwest of the country, bordering Alsace, the French Vosges, and the Swiss Jura, with the Rhine serving as its border in both directions.
The southern part of this region is the most rural and mountainous, as well as the most popular with both Germans and foreign visitors. It is worth noting that the Black Forest seems to be the source of some of the most common stereotypes about Germany:
wooden facades, smoked ham and sausages, the cuckoo clock—which was not invented by the Swiss—the hat with five red tassels—which, in its stylized form, has become the symbol of the region—craft beer, and wine.
And, of course, nature at its finest. About half of this area is made up of two natural parks, designated as UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. This explains its popularity as a year-round destination for mountain sports, ranging from hiking to skiing, as well as surfing, sailing, and canoeing on its glacier-fed lakes.
The gateway to this amazing paradise is Freiburg im Breisgau. For first-time visitors, there are several details that are immediately noticeable. Freiburg is an extremely green city. From every square or street corner, the view takes in the mountains, which blend seamlessly into the urban landscape. In addition to its natural surroundings, there are more bicycles than sparrows in the city center. And that’s not all: Freiburg is considered one of Europe’s pioneers in environmental awareness. A good example of this is the Vauban neighborhood.
Freiburg is known as a college town, and since its population is just under 230,000, the presence of students is very noticeable even outside of class. You can see them on the terraces and in the pubs downtown, as well as in the Stühlinger area, near the train station, where social life extends all the way to the small canals known as bächle.
According to tradition, if someone sets foot in one of these canals, they are destined to return to Freiburg. Cathedral Square, which is the heart of the Old Town, is always bustling with activity and hosts one of the city’s Christmas markets. The market is open every day except Sundays and holidays.
At any given moment, people sit and chat on the edge of the Renaissance fountain, which is decorated in the same style as the cathedral’s tympanum and some of its statues; or they settle into armchairs in front of the Kaufhaus, where the courtyard serves as a concert venue.
Another meeting place is the two town halls and their respective squares. The old town hall, which was created by joining several 16th-century gabled houses, houses the tourist office. The new town hall was created by renovating a university building around 1900. Its carillon rings only at noon, marking a true festival of bells.
Freiburg has even more to offer. You can visit the Renaissance-style Erasmus House, where the philosopher stayed as a refugee; the Augustinian monastery, which is now a museum; the Gothic cloister of the Franciscans, which hosts concerts; Germany’s oldest inn, Zum Roten Bären,
located on Herrenstrasse, and much more. To recharge your batteries, there’s nothing better than relaxing at a gasthof or a traditional restaurant. In the villages, these places are called bauernhof, and they offer delicacies such as ham, smoked sausages, schäufele pork ribs , and zwiebelrosbroten—which sounds like an onion pie but is actually a roast, usually served with schupfnudeln, thick potato noodles.
For dessert, you can't miss the Black Forest cake, made with dark chocolate and cherries kirschtorte soaked in kirschwasser, a cherry brandy that's perfect for fall evenings, especially next to a kachelöfen—the large tiled stoves typical of Central Europe.
Exploring the region around Freiburg can enhance your culinary adventures, such as visiting the villages that celebrate grape harvest festivals, where houses and taverns hang a birch bouquet to indicate that they are selling new wine. West of Freiburg, near the French border and the town of Breisach, the volcanic Kaiserstuhl mountain offers its slopes for vine cultivation.
If you travel east from Freiburg, you’ll reach the region known for its clock-making villages. One of them is Triberg, a charming town famous for its cuckoo clocks, located 60 kilometers from the city. It is also known for an impressive waterfall formed by the Gutach River as it plunges over large granite boulders, creating Germany’s highest waterfall, which is approximately 150 meters high.
From the center of Triberg to the waterfall, there is a well-marked trail that takes about thirty minutes to walk. The town is also home to the Black Forest Museum, which displays handicrafts, antiques, and, of course, cuckoo clocks. When you visit the Haus der 1000 Uhren shop, it will be hard not to give in to the temptation to buy one.
Triberg and neighboring Furtwangen, which is home to another museum dedicated to clocks, are located on the well-known Clock Road, a 320-kilometer circular route that begins in Villingen-Schwenningen. This area offers two additional stops of great interest. The first is located near Furtwangen, at the source of the Breg River.
