Since 2022, NASA's Martian rover Perseverance has been documenting direct evidence of lightning on the red planet. The rover's super-cam microphone has identified over fifty-five electrical discharges based on their acoustic and electrical signatures.

In the early 2000s, meteorologists discovered dust devils on Earth with electric fields in excess of 4,000 volts per meter. Also, observational data linking increased terrestrial lightning with dramatic solar activity—a phenomenon with no explanation in modern meteorology—is extra meaningful since Martian lightning exists in an atmosphere devoid of water clouds with 1% density of Earth's atmosphere.

In this Martian environment we see the largest dust devils in our solar system—reaching over twelve miles high—and witness congregations of dust devils driving powerful dust storms which nearly engulf Mars itself.
