Tired and a little jet-lagged. While I was there, getting ready for the long trip which ended up being a little more expensive because of a mistake I made with my Eurostar ticket back to Paris, then to London, and finally to Reading, I began to recall the moments I would cherish.

Canadian food and street art. I’ll be posting an article on gastronomy soon, but for now, here’s just a small selection of the hundreds of photos I took while wandering the streets, avenues, and paths of Montreal. WHERE CAN YOU FIND THE BEST STREET ART IN MONTREAL?

Before I arrived in Canada, I didn't know that Montreal is a great place for street art. So, if you're an urban art enthusiast like me, you don't have to search through dark alleys or high up on buildings to find what you're looking for. The city’s walls are adorned with stunning works of art, giving it a vibrant and colorful atmosphere. But why are there so many artistic murals everywhere?

The reason is that the city has supported street art for nearly sixty years; since 1961, the Quebec government has required that public works projects allocate 1% of their budget to artistic initiatives. This law has led to the creation of approximately 3,500 works of public art to date.

The festival takes place in the heart of Plateau Mont Royal for ten days in the summer and features free concerts, guided tours free of charge, accessible through the festival app , and the chance to watch murals being created. Incluso cuando el festival no está activo, hay mucho arte urbano para apreciar. Even when the festival isn't in session, there's plenty of street art to enjoy. One of my favorite murals even though it looks serious in the photo below is this huge mural of Authenticité, created by British artist Ben Eine. It's 1.55 m tall, so you can imagine how big it is: DISCOVERING STREET ART ON RUE SAINT-LAURENT.

Just walk down one side of the street and back up the other, and you'll discover some real gems. The boulevard is lined with antique shops, small boutiques, and local restaurants including the famous Schwartz’s, which serves the tastiest smoked meat, a Montreal specialty , so you can spend the whole day exploring this area. This initial work was funded as part of a 2018 agreement between the city of Montreal and the Ministry of Culture and Communications for the city’s cultural development. It is a collaboration between the renowned artists Tremblay and Poni. Canadian artist Cyrielle Tremblay creates dreamlike worlds in which she tells stories about indoor gardens, memories, poetry, humor, and the absurd.

Hilda Palafox también conocida como Poni es una artista mexicana que, al igual que Tremblay, logra balancear la fluidez y la sencillez, incorporando una poesía visual en sus obras. Esta impresionante ilusión óptica fue pintada por el artista español Demsky como parte del Festival de Murales de 2018.

Hilda Palafox also known as Poni is a Mexican artist who, like Tremblay, manages to balance fluidity and simplicity, incorporating visual poetry into her works. This impressive optical illusion was painted by the Spanish artist Demsky as part of the 2018 Mural Festival.

Su estilo distintivo y reconocible capta la esencia de los videojuegos arcade y las películas de ciencia ficción; en el mundo de Demsky, se podía observar cómo el tiempo se curva, creando bucles de código y puertas a otras dimensiones.

His distinctive and recognizable style captures the essence of arcade video games and science fiction movies; in Demsky’s world, you could see how time bends, creating loops of code and gateways to other dimensions.

El creador Michael Reeder, que proviene de Texas, hizo esta pieza llamada "Tan real como mi sombra" para el Festival de Murales de 2018.

Artist Michael Reeder, who is from Texas, created this piece titled “As Real as My Shadow” for the 2018 Mural Festival.

Aunque la siguiente obra no es el famoso mural de Leonard Cohen ubicado en el centro de Montreal que se puede admirar desde la parte alta del Monte Royal , sigue siendo un merecido homenaje artístico al fallecido cantante canadiense. Although the following artwork is not the famous Leonard Cohen mural located in downtown Montreal which can be admired from the top of Mount Royal , it is nonetheless a well-deserved artistic tribute to the late Canadian singer. Located at the corner of Prince Arthur and Saint-Laurent, it was created by Kevin Ledo, who took a total of 24 days to complete it. At the time, this mural was considered the largest in Montreal.
