The End of the Lego Simpsons Line

I think the 2017 Lego Krusty Burger set was just amazing. I had never built anything that looked so much like the cartoon before. The colors, labels and even the kitchen and cash register inside made me feel like I had a bit of Springfield in my hands. As I think back now, that was the only new Lego and The Simpsons collaboration we’ve had.

It’s actually a little strange. You can still watch The Simpsons every week, even though Lego seems to be done with their sets. Prior to Krusty Burger, the company put out the Simpsons House, the Kwik E Mart and a few lines of collectible minifigures. They were all full of inside jokes that you’d only see if you closely followed what was going on. At some point, everything just stopped.

There are those who say sales were low and some who claim it’s difficult to produce designs that stay exciting. Perhaps the company decided to make sets that revolve around big action sequences. In any case, it’s not great news. Springfield could have been so much bigger, with places like Moe’s Tavern, the power plant or typical shops full of the characters. You start to wonder about all the chances you might miss and that’s bizarre to think about.

Owning that Krusty Burger makes it seem like I’m holding a bit of the past, since it was meant for something much bigger that never materialized. That’s probably not a bad thing. For some people, sets are more special than toys because they remind them of what’s important. This one seems to do that more effectively than others. Even so, it’s hard not to consider what could have happened afterward.
